I started writing this blog mainly for my mother
so she can keep track of me, but everyone’s welcome to come along for the virtual ride.
I’m travelling on a System Unlimited Canrailpass from Via Rail Canada, but other than for spending my last dime to buy the pass and using the trains as my current and only address, [DISCLAIMER NOTICE] I am not affiliated with Via Rail in any way.
After leaving Halifax, I head west and make stops in Campbellton, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Niagara Falls, Windsor, Kitchener, Stratford, London, Oakville, Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Vancouver. After a week on the left coast and a few side trips to Victoria, Nanaimo, Tofino and possibly Seattle (on Amtrak’s Cascades train), I reverse direction and head east, making stops in Jasper, Prince George, Prince Rupert, Winnipeg, Thompson, Churchill, Toronto, Niagara Falls, Quebec City, Montreal, and finally Halifax.
Why am I doing this? Well, it’s something I’ve been wanting to do for years, and now is as good a time as any. I’m also worried that it soon won’t be possible to do a cross-country multi-stop tour within a two-month railpass period because of VIA’s increasing route and train cuts. But I guess the main reason I’m making this trip (besides the fact that I love train travel!) is to see the country again and make good memories. This is a trip of a lifetime for me. I’ve never gone entirely across Canada by train, just small sections of it. I haven’t been to the Rockies for ages, and I’ve never been to Vancouver Island or northern BC at all. I’ve also never been “up north”, so going into tundra and polar bear territory as I choochoo up to Churchill will be an exciting first for me.

There’s wifi on most of the trains, so chances are pretty good I’ll get back to you more or less right away. Unless of course I’m sleeping. Or in the bathroom. Or up in the dome car with my head in the clouds. Or out and about somewhere. In that case, I’ll get back to you soonish.
Thanks for the company, and ALL ABOARD!
