THE PARTY’S OVER

Bye-bye Jericho Beach Hostel!

Bye-bye beachfront location!

Bye-bye Northwest Marine Drive!

Bye-bye geese!

I won’t be able to stay at the hostel again until next May – or will I?…

There may yet be an option. Continue reading “DAY 43: KICKED TO THE CURB”

DAY 42: STILL DETRAINED

AFTER THE STORM

Hi, Mom!

Just got your email, and yes, I’m still continuing my blog, but it’s only about Vancouver at the moment. I’ll be getting back on the trains soonish (though I’m honestly not looking as forward to it as when I left Halifax – the Arctic air blasting down on me from the overhead fans is making me shiver just thinking about it, especially when it goes on for hours and hours and hours and the only place to escape from it is the stinky bathroom with people banging on the door to get in). DAY 41: THE SIRENS’ CALL

JERICHO BEACH UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

How different, the anticipation of the journey homeward than westward! It’s not that I don’t want to go back east; it’s just that I don’t want to leave where I am. Continue reading “DAY 41: THE SIRENS’ CALL”

DAYS 30-40: INTERLUDE IN THE CITY OF MILLIONAIRES

point-grey-area

I’m not ashamed to admit that I currently reside on one of the most valuable pieces of real estate in Canada – Northwest Marine Drive in Vancouver’s West Point Grey area. How chichi of me! Mind you, I’m staying at a travelers’ hostel for less than 30 bucks a night, sleeping in a dorm room with a handful of strangers, but those are just details. Continue reading “DAYS 30-40: INTERLUDE IN THE CITY OF MILLIONAIRES”

ON A BREAK

on-a-break

You’re going to find out sooner or later, so I might as well tell you – we’re on a break. Me and the trains, we’re on a break. We’re not finished; we’re just taking some time away from each other. Actually, it’s more me taking time away from the trains (they could care less one way or the other), but there you have it.  We’re officially on a break. Continue reading “ON A BREAK”

DAYS 28-30: AMBIENT AIR TEMPERATURE

ice-train

All those interested in taking an overnight trip on VIA Rail should first acquaint themselves with the concept of “ambient air temperature”. I had a crash course real-life experience in the concept a few nights ago and it’s kept me off the trains ever since. Continue reading “DAYS 28-30: AMBIENT AIR TEMPERATURE”

TRUE CONFESSIONS: Y I VIA

I decided to cut my Vancouver stay short for a few reasons. Continue reading “TRUE CONFESSIONS: Y I VIA”

DAYS 21 TO 24: VAN, MAN

img33700-Jericho-Beach-Vancouver

I’m sure y’all will be glad to hear that my trip from Winnipeg to Vancouver was the polar opposite of my trip from Toronto to Winnipeg. I’m sure you’re glad most of all because you don’t want to listen to me whine again. I promise no whining here. Continue reading “DAYS 21 TO 24: VAN, MAN”
